The Chancellor’s Faculty Fellowship was announced in July 2020 as a result of Chancellor Michelle Marks’ Equity Listening Sessions . Nominated to one-year terms, the Faculty Fellow focuses on a different topic of strategic priority to CU Denver. The inaugural Chancellor’s Faculty Fellow, Faye Caronan, PhD, was selected to focus on issues relative to equity, diversity and inclusion. The call for applications for the 2022-2023 Chancellor’s Faculty Fellow is to invite faculty expertise and energy into implementation of the 2030 Strategic Plan.
The primary responsibilities of the faculty fellow are to advise the Chancellor and the CU Denver leadership team related to the topic of focus as well as to work on projects that support the designated topic.
The campus strategic planning process brought together 3,000 participants over six months to generate more than 7,000 ideas about our future. The resulting plan—which lays out five ambitious goals for 2030 —is ambitious, inspirational, aspirational and achievable with the help of our people.
As an advisor to the Chancellor and leaders across the university, we will look to the Fellow as a thought partner and catalyst on implementation of our 2030 ambitions. The Fellow may take on responsibilities such as researching, conceptualizing, and presenting ideas for consideration; ensuring our practices around implementation are at the cutting edge seen in higher education and industry; and maintaining an understanding of issues related to implementation within the CU Denver community and raising those to the attention of the Chancellor and cabinet members.
In addition to responsibilities as an advisor and thought partner, the Fellow will advance special projects toward implementation of the strategic plan. These projects will be identified in partnership with the Chancellor and CU Denver leaders, ensuring to call upon the Fellow’s academic and professional background and research interests as well as to advance the needs of CU Denver. Examples of projects may include: executing strategies to activate schools and colleges; developing and deploying a strategy to highlight best practices and share those across the institution; or partnering with teams on specific projects prioritized for the university. The Fellow will work in close collaboration with the Chancellor as well as Jennifer Sobanet, Executive Vice Chancellor for Administration and Strategy and Mitch Morecraft, Director of Strategic Plan Implementation.
The Chancellor’s Faculty Fellowship is open to ALL faculty at CU Denver - lecturers, instructors, clinical teaching track, tenure-track and tenured faculty. There is no formal requirement for years of service to be considered; however, the Fellow will be expected to have a thorough understanding of CU Denver in order to effectively advise the Chancellor and her leadership team. The Fellow must demonstrate expertise and working knowledge in subject matter areas relevant to strategic plan implementation, including but not limited to change, organizational psychology, and/or innovation. The selection committee will evaluate candidates based upon the following criteria:
Compensation
The Fellowship is designed to require 20% effort over the entire 2022-2023 academic year, but it could be differentially engaged between the two semesters. For example, it might be 10% in the fall and 30% in the spring, but these arrangements would be negotiated with the successful applicant and their respective school/college. For each of the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters, the fellow would receive a $5000 stipend each semester and $2000 in professional development funds or those funds toward the school/college cost for a course release.

Faye Caronan, PhD, Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies at CU Denver, was named the 2020-21 Faculty Fellow in September 2020.
Dr. Caronan is an Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado Denver, specializing in Comparative Ethnic Studies and the study of U.S. Imperialism. Dr. Caronan received the Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2008. Her book, Legitimizing Empire: Filipino American and U.S. Puerto Rican Cultural Critique, is forthcoming from the University of Illinois Press. It examines how Filipino American and U.S. Puerto Rican culture challenges the ends of colonialism marked by narratives of U.S. exceptionalism by representing how U.S. power does not withdraw from Philippine and Puerto Rican affairs but transitions. Caronan's new research project looks at the role that race played in the imagining of the U.S. nation and its empire in the Pacific in the first half of the 20th century.
Dr. Caronan earned a PhD in Ethnic Studies from University of California, San Diego.
