DEVELOPING A PHD PROGRAM IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES IN TARAZ, KAZAKHSTAN
Faculty at Taraz State University, Kazakstan, are challenged to meet international educational standards because of a lack of access to modern scientific research findings and an absence of modern scientific equipment. Larry Anderson, professor of chemistry, determined that it is critical to develop local expertise and establish regulations to address the environmental issues of this country.
Anderson taught a four-week environmental sciences course for undergraduate and graduate level students at Taraz State University. He additionally consulted on the development of a PhD program in Environmental Sciences for the purpose of designing a research program that comply with international standards. Anderson provided practical guidance on developing the Environmental Sciences curriculum, and collaborated with department deans, chairs and university administration staff. He worked students on their research projects and helped them gain access to international scientific literature in important fields.
