Engagement on-campus with the LGBTQ+ community

As an urban commuter campus with three different institutions, Auraria can sometimes feel a bit diffuse. However, there are a number of ways faculty can join and build community on the downtown campus.

  • Get “in the know” by joining on-campus email lists, such as the Women and Gender Center and the LGBTQ Student Center.
  • Get involved by joining on-campus committees and initiatives, such as the Faculty Assembly committees for LGBTQ+ and Women's Issues, or similar committees at the Faculty Council.
  • Take a Safe Zone training class and increase the visibility of LGBTQ+ allies on campus.
  • Attend the Fall Symposium on inclusion.
  • Propose a project to enhance diversity and inclusion on campus. Support for projects exist through various grants and awards, including:

     

Faculty Assembly and Faculty Council

There are several opportunities through Faculty Assembly and Faculty Council to access resources, contribute, or become involved in LGBTQ+ issues and initiatives.

LGBTQ+ Faculty Assembly Committee

The LGBTQ+ Faculty Assembly Committee seeks active and engaged members to participate in the committee’s work. Nominations for the committee occur in late February with voting in March. Positions are allocated by College or School, with an additional position for the Auraria Library.

The Committee is involved in a number of activities, including:

  • Planning on-campus events for the LGBTQ+ community and allies;
  • On-campus research projects aimed at learning more about the experiences of LGBTQ+ faculty, staff, and students;
  • Review, evaluation, and proposal of new and existing university policies and procedures affecting LGBTQ+ faculty;
  • Support of off-campus events, partly in an effort to raise the visibility of our inclusive campus community; and\
  • Assuring in various ways that faculty, staff, students and programs are well represented in campus policies and procedures relative to the purview of the committee.

The Faculty Council Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer+ Committee

The LGBTQ+ Committee considers concerns of LGBTQ+ faculty, including:

  • Assessing the cultural climate of the university as it pertains to opportunities of LGBTQ+ faculty for academic advancement, productivity and appropriate compensation;
  • Making recommendations for creating an academic environment that fosters the academic success of LGBTQ+ faculty; 
  • Working to assure fairness in the recruitment and retention of LGBTQ+ faculty;
  • Developing support networks and recommending policy to address the needs of LGBTQ+ faculty
