Editorial Style Guide

The university recognizes the importance of grammatical consistency and accuracy throughout its written communications, both digital and print. Our editorial style is based upon the Associated Press Stylebook, with some exceptions and refinements. The following guide defines those exceptions and highlights some of the most common style questions that arise.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Introduction to this Section and Inclusive Language 

The goal of CU Denver’s 2030 Strategic Plan is to make higher education Work for All. A vital part of the strategy is to become the nation’s first equity-serving institution—one that provides a racially and culturally enhancing environment. In order to provide a sense of belonging for all, University Communications must reflect our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).  

Communications must include different viewpoints, represent diverse individuals, and foster racial/cultural learning. Diversity includes people of different races and ethnicities, genders and sexualities, cultures and religions, backgrounds and economics, disabilities and ages. Additionally, first-generation, military/veteran, and transfer students are included in our definition of diversity. 

Language can change quickly, which is why all communications from the university and the Center for Identity and Inclusion have formed an Equity Language Working Group consisting of faculty, staff, and students. They will review diversity-related language at least once a year.
