J-1 Exchange Visitor Program for Scholars & Student Interns

A legal spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21 may be eligible for J-2 status to accompany the J-1 or follow the J-1 separately to the U.S.

To issue Form(s) DS-2019 for dependents status to accompany the J-1 or follow the J-1 separately to the U.S., ISSS will need:

When applying for J-2 visas, the dependents must present proof of familial relationship, i.e. marriage certificate and/or birth certificate(s) translated into English.

Request to Add/Change Dependents

While in the U.S., J-2 dependents may attend school, volunteer and apply for J-2 employment authorization with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

The U.S. Department of State requires J-2 dependents to have medical insurance. See Medical Insurance Requirement.

The J-2 cannot remain in the U.S. after the J-1 Exchange Visitor departs the U.S. unless the J-1 will be outside the U.S. for 30 days or less. The impact of a J-1’s departure should be considered before the J-2 accepts employment or enrolls in classes.
