Transfer-in from Another J Program

J-1 Exchange Visitor Program for Scholars & Student Interns

A J-1 Research Scholar, Professor, Short-term Scholar, Specialist or Student Intern who is sponsored by another J program can transfer their J-1 sponsorship to the university under the following conditions:

  • They have not reached the maximum time limit for their category

· J-1 Category

  • The academic objective is substantially the same per the Subject/Field Code and Subject/Field Code Remarks on the current DS-2019. Review the Subject/Field Codes here: http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cipcode/.
  • The current J program sponsor agrees to releases the J record in SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System maintained by U.S. Department of Homeland Security)
  • The prospective scholar’s or student intern's program activity or employment starts shortly after the SEVIS release date.

The release date of the J record in SEVIS must be coordinated between the current J sponsor, ISSS and the host unit and the HR Business Partner must submit the J-1 Transfer-in Eligibility Form completed by the scholar or student intern with the J-1 Request for Form DS-2019.

ISSS issues Form DS-2019 shortly after the SEVIS release date.
