Twitter is fourth-largest social network in the U.S. with more than 321 million unique monthly users. It provides a place for short text updates (280 characters or less) as well as photos and 90-second videos. Users create profiles and establish relationships with people and companies by following various accounts. The key to Twitter is being succinct and interesting. 


Your Twitter feed shows all of the tweets from accounts you follow, many of which are displayed in reverse chronological order or randomly, whichever option you select. You are able to click on a tweet and see threaded discussion around users who have chosen to reply. 


Once 140-character and now 280-character messages that are sent out from your Twitter account. Tweets can contain images (no more than four) and short video clips.

Heart emoji

The heart emoji functions the same as a “like” or “reaction” on Facebook. It’s a way of saying you like something that another user has posted. Other users can see tweets that you like, but it won’t be distributed.


A function that allows you to share a tweet from another user with your followers. This content will show up on your Twitter profile.


Words, phrases or abbreviations with a pound symbol (#) placed in front will become hyperlinked. Hashtags are a way of organizing tweets around particular subject area or trend, such as #CUDenver, #CUintheCity. We advise using two to four for each tweet.

Live tweeting events

Live tweeting an event can be a great way to engage your followers who may not be able to attend. This is done by pre-establishing a hashtag and alerting your followers, along with everyone attending the event, to follow the hashtag. Following a hashtag is done by clicking on the hashtag in your Twitter stream. There are also several tools that can set up a search stream and view a hashtag, such as Hootsuite and Tweetdeck.
